20+ Scriptures to Pray in the Fight Against Slavery and Human Trafficking

The Word of God is clear. We wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against spiritual forces, against rulers of darkness…. and I thank God this is true especially in the fight against slavery and human trafficking.

When it comes to evil of this magnitude and depth, I often feel out of my league. I wonder what I can do. I doubt my own ability to impact something this massive, but God’s Word reminds me I can have an impact. I can create change — through prayer. And so can you!

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Ephesians 6:12 (NIV)

But I must confess, even praying against this great evil of our day, can sometimes feel overwhelming. Where to begin? Here’s more than 20 verses to use in your prayer in this fight. I hope you’ll use these and join me in the battle on our knees.
(all verses are NIV unless otherwise noted)

For Captives and Slaves (Sexual & Otherwise)

Not all victims in slavery and human trafficking are sex slaves. Many are slaves producing goods for us to use, or used themselves for entertainment of the wealthy. Camel races, cell phone batteries, chocolate, coffee, flowers, clothing, and so many areas rely on slavery and human trafficking. Prayer is one way we fight that system.

Romans 13:12
The night is almost gone; the day of salvation will soon be here. So remove your dark deeds like dirty clothes, and put on the shining armor of right living.

John 8:36
So if the Son sets you free you will be free indeed.

Psalm 118:5
When hard pressed I cried out to the LORD; he brought me into a spacious place

Jeremiah 29:11
For I know the plans I have for you. declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Psalm 10:17 (NLT)
LORD, you know the hopes of the helpless. Surely you will hear their cries and comfort them.

2 Corinthians 4:16-18 (ESV)
So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

For Those Rescued and In Recovery

For victims of slavery and human trafficking their rescue and recovery can mean healing and learning new skills such as a marketable trade. Helping them find jobs after is important to keeping them out of more illegal activity. Pray with me for their healing and for God to reveal His purpose for each of their lives.

Galatians 5:1
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free so stand firm then and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery

Colossians 1:12-15
…always thanking the Father. He has enabled you to share in the inheritance that belongs to his people, who live in the light. For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear

Romans 5:2-5
Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

Son, who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins. Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation

For Those on the Front Lines

A group of people who need our prayers very much are those individuals and teams who are out freeing the captives! But being on the front lines means they are living in danger, going into enemy territory and sometimes leaving their families at home. Pray for these important men and women whose work is literally saving lives.

Ephesians 6:12
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

2 Corinthians 3:17
Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

Isaiah 61:1
The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me because the LORD has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives, and release from darkness for prisoners.

For Repentance of the Perpetrators

Some may have a hard time praying for the repentance of those who knowingly use humans for selfish gain, those who keep slaves, sexually exploit others, even children! But our God wishes than none would perish. He wishes they would turn from their wickedness and it could be their very repentance that helps bring down the whole system. Pray that they will repent, turn from their wickedness and become advocates in the fight against slavery and human trafficking for Jesus!

John 3:19-20
And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil. All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed.

Psalm 82:5
But these oppressors know nothing; they are so ignorant! They wander about in darkness, while the whole world is shaken to the core.

Proverbs 4:19
But the way of the wicked is like total darkness. They have no idea what they are stumbling over.

For the Partakers and Partners in Slavery

This is us. This is referring to those of us who knowingly or unknowingly participate in slavery because of addiction to sexual sin in the use of pornography — or because of our purchases that are produced with the sweat of slaves. There are many. We aren’t innocent.

Luke 23:34
Father forgive them, for they know not what they are doing.

2 Corinthians 4:4
In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

Ephesians 5:11
Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness but rather expose them

Matthew 6:22-23
“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

2 Peter 2:4-6
For God did not spare even the angels who sinned. He threw them into hell, in gloomy pits of darkness, where they are being held until the day of judgment. And God did not spare the ancient world–except for Noah and the seven others in his family. Noah warned the world of God’s righteous judgment. So God protected Noah when he destroyed the world of ungodly people with a vast flood. Later, God condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah and turned them into heaps of ashes. He made them an example of what will happen to ungodly people.

For Things in Darkness to be Revealed

All things in darkness must come into the light. This global problem gaining traction through publicity and awareness campaigns will help with this, but the enemy loves darkness. Pray that light will come and reveal all that is done in darkness so that those who are guilty will have to stop the exploitation of others.

John 1:4-5
The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.

1 Peter 2:16
Live as free people, but do not let your freedom as a cover-up for evil.
